Position Description


We are seeking a Manager of Software Engineering in Test to lead and oversee our hybrid QA structure, combining centralized quality governance with embedded QA engineers across value streams. This role will be responsible for establishing and maintaining QA best practices, ensuring alignment across teams, and driving continuous improvements in software quality.

The Manager of Software Engineering in Test will work closely with engineering, product management, and business stakeholders to create a scalable, efficient, and high-performing QA function that supports our company’s growth and product excellence.

Key Responsibilities

QA Leadership & Strategy

  • Define and implement a centralized QA strategy, ensuring standardized processes across value streams.
  • Foster a culture of quality ownership within development teams, encouraging best practices for testing, automation, and CI/CD integration.
  • Lead the QA Center of Excellence (Quality Guild) to facilitate knowledge sharing, process improvement, and skill development.
  • Establish quality KPIs and metrics to measure testing effectiveness and product quality.

Team Management & Development

  • Directly manage a team of QA engineers embedded within value streams, providing mentorship, guidance, and career development.
  • Partner with value stream leads to ensure QA resources are effectively integrated into agile teams.
  • Conduct performance reviews, provide coaching, and identify training needs for QA team members.
  • Lead hiring efforts for new QA team members, ensuring the team scales efficiently.

Standardization & Process Improvement

  • Define and maintain test automation frameworks, tools, and best practices across all value streams.
  • Ensure consistency in test case management, defect tracking, and reporting methodologies.
  • Drive adoption of test-driven development (TDD), behavior-driven development (BDD), and continuous testing strategies.
  • Evaluate and integrate new tools, technologies, and methodologies to enhance QA efficiency.

Cross-Team Collaboration

  • Work closely with Engineering, DevOps, and Product Management to align testing efforts with development and release cycles.
  • Advocate for shift-left testing approaches, ensuring quality is considered early in the development lifecycle.
  • Participate in agile ceremonies (standups, sprint planning, retrospectives) to provide QA insights and support.
  • Collaborate with business stakeholders to ensure user experience and performance testing align with business goals.

Continuous Improvement & Metrics Tracking

  • Track and report on key QA metrics, including defect leakage rate, test automation coverage, and cycle time.
  • Identify bottlenecks and inefficiencies in the testing process and implement improvements.
  • Drive post-mortem reviews for major incidents, ensuring learnings are captured and integrated into future QA processes.

Requirements

Technical Skills

  • 5+ years of experience in software quality assurance, with at least 2 years in a leadership role.
  • Strong knowledge of QA methodologies, test automation frameworks, and CI/CD practices.
  • Hands-on experience with automation tools (e.g., Selenium, Cypress, Playwright, Postman, JMeter, TestComplete).
  • Familiarity with modern DevOps practices, including containerization (Docker, Kubernetes) and cloud-based testing (Azure, AWS, GCP).
  • Experience with agile development methodologies (Scrum, Kanban) and working within value stream teams.
  • Strong understanding of test management tools (Jira, TestRail, Xray, Zephyr) and defect tracking processes.

Soft Skills & Leadership

  • Strong leadership, mentorship, and coaching skills to develop a high-performing QA team.
  • Excellent collaboration and stakeholder management skills across technical and business teams.
  • Strong problem-solving mindset with a data-driven approach to decision-making.
  • Ability to balance hands-on technical expertise with strategic leadership.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in scaling QA teams in a growing organization.
  • Knowledge of performance and security testing best practices.
  • ISTQB or similar QA certification (preferred but not required).
  • Experience in Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions, or other CI/CD tools.
