Job Description

The Assistant Director plays a crucial role within the Operations Division, reporting directly to the Director of Campus Safety and Security. Their duties include overseeing personnel scheduling, managing payroll, and handling overtime, all while fostering a close partnership with Student Affairs. This position demands meticulous organizational skills and effective communication to maintain the safety and security standards of the campus.

Responsibilities: include but are not limited to:

  • Reinforce program goals and work objectives consistent with University policy, relevant city, state, and federal law, and national best practices in campus safety. Administers the day to day security and public safety operations.
  • Maintain close working relationships with the students, employees, Sisters of Charity, and guests with particular cooperation expected with the offices and staffs of Residence Life, Student Activities, Athletics, Campus Events, and Facilities.
  • Review and edit daily incident reports and ensure proper notifications. Prepare comprehensive reports as necessary.
  • Institute and enforce emergency operating procedures.
  • Coordinate and enforce the campus parking program.
  • While assuring confidentiality, maintain adequate records pertaining to security reports, key issuance records, parking summons billing, and accident and safety problems.
  • Coordinate the maintenance of necessary equipment required to accomplish the mission of the security department. Coordinate the distribution and maintenance of uniforms.
  • Remain at or report to the college in the event of an emergency to assure safe and uninterrupted operations.
  • The Assistant Director is required to be on call and respond to serious emergency incidents on campus.
  • Partake on division, University -wide or community committees as assigned. Limited travel (1-3 times per year) to professional conferences may be required.
  • Work Schedule - Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday 10am-6pm, Thursday and Friday 6pm-2am (hours may be subject to change). During off hours, responsible to provide telephonic support to Security Supervisors or respond to the college if necessary.

Personnel:

  • Supervise uniformed security personnel, prioritize their assignments, and maintain a continuous 24/7 work schedule.
  • Oversee state-mandated and in-service training for security personnel, focusing on policy enforcement, fire safety, and accident prevention.
  • Handle payroll preparation, monitor attendance, and leave usage according to college policy.
  • Take disciplinary action when necessary and collaborate with the Director on disciplinary measures.
  • Assist in evaluating security personnel performance.

Enforcement and Prevention:

  • Serve as a liaison with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies.
  • Assist in educational programs for students and staff on crime, accident, and fire prevention.
  • Monitor University property to prevent crime, enforce regulations, and provide public service.
  • Respond to emergencies and assume command until the Director arrives.
  • Assist the Director in follow-up investigations of incidents and recommend corrective actions.

Life Safety:

  • Conduct fire drills as per New York State Education Law and maintain fire drill logs.
  • Aid the Director in coordinating campus events and staffing needs, ensuring safe assembly and dispersal at large-scale events.
  • Conduct and document regular campus site surveys to identify and address dangerous or unsafe conditions in collaboration with Facilities.

Requirements

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Criminal Justice, Security Management, Security Administration, or a related field (preferred).
  • Minimum of fifteen years of job experience, with a preference for experience in law enforcement or safety-oriented roles, including supervisory experience.
  • Familiarity with relevant federal laws such as the Jeanne Clery Act, Title IX, Violence Against Women Act, and Suzanne Lyall Campus Safety Act. Knowledgeable about New York City Fire Safety and Emergency Response protocols, as well as current campus security trends and best practices.
  • Proficiency in database management, Microsoft Office, and familiarity with various security systems.
  • Ability to respond promptly to college needs.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Possession of a valid New York State Driver’s License.
